2. Ownership of Website Content
Original website text, page organization, visual presentation, code, data structures, graphics, icons, and other site materials may be protected by copyright and related law.
3. Valois Media Branding
Valois Media, Valois Media Holdings, the VMH monogram and quill, logos, trade dress, slogans, and distinctive presentation may be protected by trademark, copyright, unfair-competition, or related law.
4. VMH Lumière Software and Interface
The VMH Lumière name, reader interface, original code, controls, layouts, documentation, and service presentation are proprietary to the extent owned or controlled by VMH or CSC.
5. Original Literary Works
Original novels, poetry, essays, and other literary works published through VMH remain protected according to the rights held by their authors, VMH, CSC, or applicable licensors.
6. Editorial Contributions
Editorial selection, arrangement, editing, introductions, contextual material, and other original editorial contributions may be independently protected even where an underlying text is not.
7. Forewords and Introductions
Original forewords, prefaces, introductions, afterwords, and similar material are protected works unless expressly stated otherwise.
8. Annotations and Bibliographies
Original explanatory notes, annotations, bibliographic commentary, research organization, and editorial selection may be protected as original authorship or compilation.
9. Original Illustrations and Cover Art
Illustrations, photographs, cover art, typography, and visual compositions remain protected according to the rights held by the artist, designer, publisher, or licensor.
10. Public-Domain Source Texts
Some editions may contain source texts believed to be public domain in a relevant territory. A public-domain source text does not place new introductions, annotations, illustrations, cover designs, formatting, or compilations in the public domain.
11. Territory-Specific Copyright Status
Copyright status may vary by jurisdiction. A work available through VMH may be public domain in one country and protected in another. Users are responsible for complying with the law applicable to their location and use.
12. No Claim Beyond Rights Held
VMH does not claim exclusive rights in facts, ideas, titles where unprotectable, public-domain expression, or third-party material except to the extent a valid license or other right applies.
13. Personal-Use License
Purchasing or accessing a digital title permits personal reading only under the applicable license. It does not grant publication, performance, distribution, adaptation, translation, resale, or commercial exploitation rights.
14. Prohibited Reproduction and Distribution
Except as permitted by law or written authorization, you may not reproduce, upload, transmit, distribute, sell, publicly display, republish, or make derivative commercial use of protected VMH materials.
15. Automated Extraction and Scraping
Automated extraction, bulk copying, systematic scraping, circumvention of access controls, or harvesting of protected books, contributor records, or service data is prohibited except where expressly authorized.
16. Artificial-Intelligence and Dataset Use
Protected VMH content may not be copied, ingested, used to train or evaluate artificial-intelligence systems, included in datasets, or used to generate substitutive commercial content without written authorization, except where applicable law provides otherwise.
17. Trademark Notice
Use of VMH names, logos, reader branding, or other source identifiers without permission may create confusion and is prohibited where protected by law. Reference to a third-party mark does not imply endorsement or affiliation.
18. Copyright Complaints
A rights holder who believes material available through the Services infringes copyright should send a written notice to the contact information below. VMH may remove or restrict material while reviewing a sufficiently detailed complaint.
19. Required Contents of a Rights Notice
A notice should identify the copyrighted work, identify the challenged material and its location, provide the complaining party’s contact information, state a good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized, state that the information is accurate and authorized, and include a physical or electronic signature.
20. Counter-Notification Process
A person whose material was removed may submit a counter-notice identifying the material, stating under penalty of perjury that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification, consenting to an appropriate legal forum where required, and providing a signature and contact information.
21. Repeat-Infringement Measures
VMH may suspend accounts, revoke access, or terminate services for users who repeatedly infringe rights or repeatedly submit unlawful material, consistent with applicable law and the circumstances.
