Copyright
This notice explains the rights VMH claims in its website, software, original publications, editorial editions, cover art, annotations, and other publishing material—and the important limits on those claims where an underlying work is public domain or owned by another rights holder.
1. General Copyright Notice
Copyright © 2026 Valois Media Holdings. All Rights Reserved. This notice applies to copyright, compilation, software, artwork, editorial, and other rights owned or controlled by VMH, CSC, contributors, authors, or licensors. It does not assert ownership beyond the rights actually held.
Copyright notices identify claimed rights in a particular publication or compilation; they do not convert public-domain source material into proprietary expression merely because VMH publishes an edition of it.
2. Website, Software, and Publishing Platform
Original VMH website text, page organization, visual presentation, software, data organization, graphics, icons, metadata, and original interface materials may be protected by copyright and related law. VMH Lumière, including VMH-created code, layout, controls, documentation, branding, and service presentation, is proprietary to the extent owned or controlled by VMH or CSC.
3. Valois Media Branding and Marks
Valois Media, Valois Media Holdings, VMH, VMH Lumière, the VMH monogram and quill, logos, source identifiers, and distinctive trade dress may be protected by trademark, copyright, unfair-competition, or related law. No website license authorizes use of those identifiers in a manner likely to create confusion about source, sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation.
4. Published Catalog and Edition-Specific Rights
The catalog below identifies the active VMH products represented in the current publishing data. Each card links to its product page and uses the cover asset associated with that specific product. Rights may differ among the underlying source text, VMH-added editorial matter, original cover art, illustrations, formatting, and the publication as a compilation.
5. The Sun Also Rises — Separate VMH Editions
VMH publishes distinct editions of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. The Sun Also Rises (Annotated) and The Sun Also Rises: A 20th Century Classic are separate VMH products with different edition identities, cover assets, and added editorial matter. The annotated eBook and annotated paperback are also separate format products. Nothing in this notice should be read as merging those editions or their respective covers.
6. Annotated and Editorial Editions
Where VMH publishes an annotated, edited, illustrated, or specially prepared edition, VMH may own or control rights in original forewords, introductions, annotations, bibliographic commentary, editorial selection and arrangement, original artwork, cover design, typography, metadata, formatting, and other protectable additions even if the underlying literary text is public domain in a relevant territory.
7. Original Literary Works
Original fiction, poetry, essays, and other literary works published through VMH remain protected according to the rights held by their authors, VMH, CSC, or applicable licensors. Once Upon a Dream, identified in the catalog as a poetry collection by Alexander Valois, is presented as an original work rather than as a public-domain-source edition.
Other VMH-published original works are protected according to their applicable authorship and publishing rights, whether distributed digitally, in print, or through VMH Lumière.
8. Forewords, Introductions, and Editorial Commentary
Original forewords, prefaces, introductions, afterwords, explanatory essays, editorial commentary, and similar material are independently protected unless expressly identified otherwise. Reproducing a public-domain source text does not authorize copying VMH-added editorial material.
9. Annotations and Bibliographies
Original annotations, annotated bibliographies, research organization, commentary, and editorial selection may constitute protectable authorship or compilation. Facts and public-domain information remain free for lawful use, but the particular expression, selection, and arrangement may be protected.
10. Cover Art, Illustrations, Photography, and Design
Original cover art, illustrations, photographs, typographic compositions, and design elements remain protected according to the rights held by the artist, designer, photographer, VMH, CSC, or other rights holder. Product-page display of a cover does not grant permission to reproduce that artwork separately or use it to market another edition.
11. Public-Domain Source Texts
Some literary source texts published by VMH may be public domain in the United States or another relevant jurisdiction. VMH does not claim exclusive copyright in expression that is genuinely public domain. Copyright status can vary by country, publication history, restoration rules, translation, edition, and other facts; users are responsible for determining the legal status applicable to their proposed use.
12. Territory-Specific Copyright Status
A work may be public domain in one jurisdiction while still protected in another. Availability through valoismedia.com does not constitute a representation that every component of an edition may be copied, distributed, adapted, or commercially exploited in every country.
13. No Claim Beyond Rights Held
VMH does not claim exclusive rights in facts, ideas, methods, titles where unprotectable, public-domain expression, or third-party material merely because those elements appear on the website or in a VMH edition. Rights are claimed only to the extent supported by copyright, contract, trademark, license, authorship, or other applicable law.
14. Personal Reading and Purchased Copies
Purchase or account access grants the customer the personal-use rights stated in the applicable product terms. It does not transfer copyright or grant publication, resale, adaptation, translation, public performance, dataset, sublicensing, or commercial-distribution rights. A customer may retain rights that applicable law cannot lawfully restrict.
15. Prohibited Reproduction and Distribution
Except as permitted by law or written authorization, protected VMH material may not be reproduced, republished, uploaded, transmitted, distributed, sold, publicly displayed, or used to create a substitutive commercial edition. Customers may not redistribute purchased eBook files or share access credentials to provide third parties with VMH account-library access.
16. Automated Extraction, Scraping, and Circumvention
Systematic scraping, bulk copying, automated extraction of protected books or editorial material, bypass of account or entitlement controls, and circumvention of technical measures are prohibited except where expressly authorized or protected by applicable law.
17. Artificial-Intelligence and Dataset Use
Protected VMH content may not be copied into training, evaluation, retrieval, synthetic-data, or other machine-learning datasets for commercial or substitutive use without authorization, except to the extent applicable law provides otherwise. This restriction does not claim ownership of public-domain source expression standing alone.
18. Third-Party Rights
Third-party names, works, photographs, trademarks, retailer marks, software libraries, and other materials remain the property of their respective rights holders. Their appearance on VMH pages is for identification, attribution, interoperability, commentary, distribution, or another lawful purpose and does not imply endorsement unless expressly stated.
19. Copyright Complaints
A rights holder who believes material available through the Services infringes copyright should send a written notice identifying the copyrighted work, the challenged material and its location, contact information, a good-faith statement regarding authorization, an accuracy/authority statement, and a physical or electronic signature. VMH may remove or restrict material while reviewing a sufficiently detailed complaint.
20. Counter-Notifications
Where applicable, a person whose material was removed may submit a counter-notice identifying the removed material, stating under penalty of perjury that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification, providing appropriate contact and jurisdiction statements where required, and including a signature. VMH may restore material when legally appropriate.
21. Repeat Infringement and Account Measures
VMH may suspend accounts, revoke access, remove material, or terminate services for repeated infringement or repeated unlawful activity, consistent with applicable law, contracts, customer rights, and the circumstances of the matter.
22. Permission Requests
Requests to reproduce VMH-owned editorial material, cover art, original writing, or other protected content should identify the work, material requested, proposed use, territory, format, quantity or audience, duration, and whether the use is commercial. No permission is effective unless granted by a person authorized to grant the applicable rights.
